The German unions of farmers (Deutscher Bauernverband) and potato producers (Union der Deutschen Kartoffelwirtschaft) put out a statement indicating that late blight is currently a major threat to European potato production, the largest it has been for a long time.
A combination of new fungicide resistant strains, a limited catalog of approved fungicides, and reduced use of said fungicides is creating a situation where epidemics are causing considerable financial damage, particularly in major potato producing regions such as the Netherlands and Denmark. The unions call for a collaboration between potato-producing countries in the region to develop new strategies and methods to prevent the spread of late blight.
